Union Square Cafe has always been the offspring of a mixed marriage between a trattoria and a bistro, with an American bar and grill somewhere in the family tree. That’s not happening at Union Square Cafe right now the cooks seem to have dialed right in on the qualities that made these dishes favorites in the first place. The risk in churning out old recipes like this is that the kitchen becomes bored, and the food boring. With maitake mushrooms and shiny green pesto, it’s so filling and likable that you could make a meal of it and walk away more content than if you’d had a 12-course tasting somewhere else. Do I even need to say this? It’s the most famous thing about Union Square Cafe: The servers are always happy to help.Ĭonsider me a fanboy when it comes to the ideally crunchy fritto misto, and the polenta, too, a $13 bowl of warm fluff that has absorbed its weight, and then some, in milk and creamy young cow’s milk cheese. The menu does not go so far as to point out all the old showstoppers - some from Michael Romano’s reign in the kitchen and others from that of the current chef, Carmen Quagliata - but the servers are happy to help. As Jason Wagner, the wine director, explained one night, those are the countries that were on the list when Union Square Cafe opened in 1985. ![]() The cellar stocks wines from Italy, France and the United States, and nowhere else. The art collection has come along for the ride, too, and one of the pleasures of the Rockwell layout is the way you seem to bump into a Frank Stella or a Claes Oldenburg or a Judy Rifka every time you turn around. The upstairs bar top where my cocktail rested was precisely the size of the old upstairs bar top because it was, in fact, the same piece of wood with a fresh coat of varnish. Rockwell swears that the new one is the same length: 27 feet 1 inch. I could swear the original downstairs bar was smaller, but that’s probably because I could almost never get a seat there. Some of this is done subliminally: Pendant lamps downstairs hang at the height of the 16th Street ceilings. The Rockwell Group, the architecture firm, was given the job of evoking the old address in a space that is much roomier, without the narrow passageways and sunken dining room. In the most recent appraisal, in 2009, Frank Bruni awarded it two. Over the years, reviews of Union Square Cafe in The Times have ranged from two to three stars. But then, fluctuation is normal in a long-running restaurant. I was never quite as amazed by the food as it seemed I was supposed to be. ![]() ![]() #1 D’Addario Planet Waves NS Ukulele Capo Pro – Best Ukulele Capo Overall Every category except toggle / elastic capo is represented here so it’s easy to find one that’s right for you. Here’s a quick rundown of five of the best ukulele capos on the market right now. Like C-Clamp capos, this style is meant for transposing and not for quick changes. It’s secure, adjustable, and well-padded, plus it has a low profile so there’s nothing too bulky attached to your uke’s neck. This is a newer type of ukulele capo that combines the best features of the spring-loaded capo and the C-Clamp capo. C-Clamp ukulele capos are best for transposing entire songs – they’re not designed for quick changes. Otherwise, the metal might cause some scratches to the finish. One caveat here: If you decide to go for a C-Clamp capo, double-check to make sure that the padded portion is in contact with you ukulele’s neck while you’re tightening. While C-Clamp ukulele capos are a bit more expensive than simpler ones, they offer the advantage of allowing you to adjust the amount of pressure that’s being placed on your strings, and there’s no handle to worry about. Although it’s not my favorite capo overall, it’s great for tough barre chords and it’s lightning fast. I like the Kyser quick change capo best in this category. You simply clamp it into place and start playing. Most spring-loaded capos are inexpensive, easy to use, and pretty well-rated. One downside is that there’s a sizeable handle, which can be a bit bulky. Spring loaded ukulele capos are common and most people like using them. I haven’t tried this Bill Russell elastic capo from Jim Dunlop but it gets good reviews overall, and it would be my pick for best toggle capo / elastic capo if I was going to include one here. ![]() Go ahead and get one if you want! Some people really like them and you might, too. I’m not going to include any of these in this guide to the best ukulele capos and here’s why: Elastic capos are easy to throw in your bag and they’re really cheap (usually around $5) but they break easily and they have a tendency to cause your uke to go out of tune pretty quickly. You put it on by wrapping it around the uke’s neck. Also known as a toggle capo, this is basically a wide piece of elastic with a piece of stiffer material that holds your strings in place. If you’re on a super tight budget, then you might like an elastic ukulele capo best. ![]() Master the Ukulele in 30 or less, Guaranteed ![]() Every type of capo comes with some pros and cons. Personally, I’m a fan of the D’Addario NS Ukulele Capo Pro, but that’s just me. Capos aren’t terribly expensive so if budget isn’t a big deal, you might want to try the various types and see which one you like best. I bought it for $10 in early 2001 and played it heavily in online multiplayer through 2007. ![]() You could enjoy all of that (and many people did) for years without ever paying Epic Games more than the price you paid for the original game. There must have been over 10,000 (free) custom maps and mods, and the game servers and communities existed as completely independent entities. There was clan match activity and an active clan community. UT99 took off and had a life of its own that was independent of Epic Games (and profit) and pretty much totally out of its control. They would probably need to repeat the original Unreal->Unreal Tournament or Half Life->Counterstrike/Team Fortress 2 pattern by releasing a big name single-player Unreal 3 game and then releasing UT4 after Unreal 3 became popular.Ĭlick to expand.I suspect that this is the ultimate reason why we'll never see a game like UT99 again-it's just not profitable by today's standards (for big name, first-rate titles). I do think it's possible that a first-rate UT4 (aka UT99 + Onslaught, Bombing Run, and Invasion) could be developed, but whether or not PC gamers would learn of its existence, I have no idea. ![]() The other problem is that the "freemium" games such as Team Fortress 2 and Planetside 2 may have changed the FPS business model or at least the climate. ![]() Much of the player base that remembers UT99 and UT 2004 has "aged out" of computer gaming and most of today's gamers have never even heard of Unreal or Unreal Tournament if they were to release a UT4 they would basically be starting from scratch as far as marketing is concerned. I wouldn't count on seeing another UT game for that reason. In short, UT3 was a joke and it killed the franchise. UT3's vehicles for Warfare (Onslaught) however did have an inferior feel to those of UT 2004 (and no third person view option). Not as good as UT99, but the on-foot game play was much better than that of UT 2004 (for CTF and Deathmatch). The real shame about UT3 is that the basic game play itself was pretty good. ![]() In short, going from UT99/UT 2004 to UT3 was like downgrading from a souped up Lexus to a stripped down Yugo (cheap, junky Yugoslavian car from the '80's). It also felt clunky and had an inferior Map Vote system compared to what was in UT 2004. Make no mistake, UT3 was an abomination! When the game was released it was in a buggy Beta state-you couldn't even add server favorites to the server browser! The user interface and server browser and been horribly consolized and it was inferior to that of prior UT games. The game play of UT3 itself was not bad, but everything that surrounded the game play was an insult to UT fans because it had been consolized and the looks had been Gears-of-Warrified. Then came UT 2004 which was inferior to UT99 for on-foot game play (Deathmatch, Capture-the-Flag, Bombing Run) but was a good game in its own right for Onslaught and the Invasion-RPG mod. After UT99, Epic began to destroy their franchise.įirst came UT 2003 which changed the game play and which was almost universally despised by most UT99 fans, at least by the online multiplayer player base. Veterans of the genre should also start straight from hardcore difficulty, in addition to more damage from hits, though a good ninja should not get hit at all in the first place as the enemies notice you quicker. As logical as it sounds, this isn’t the case with every game of this genre. Lure/Distraction is bound to the same button for everyone, as are attack and character-related skills. This is just an immersion breaker, but the (usually) interesting dialog in those situations makes up for it. There are points in the game for example where one member is inside a building on the top floors, another one is outside at the ground level and they still communicate perfectly.
